A two-tier wooden bento box inside covered with red urushi lacquer.

Shirakinuri is a traditional Japanese lacquer technique where the natural wood surface is left mostly unpainted, showing the grain, and is coated with a very thin layer of transparent urushi lacquer.

A Japanese bento box is a small container, usually rectangular or square, made of wood, or lacquered wood, often with multiple tiers. It has separate compartments to neatly arrange traditional Japanese meals, which typically consist of several smaller dishes.

Urushi is traditional Japanese lacquer made from the sap of the urushi tree. It’s used to coat wood, creating a durable, glossy, and waterproof finish often seen in fine crafts and tableware. See more about the art of urushi in our blog post bellow.
