Six finely patterned gourds are painted on a bright yellow glaze. Gourds have long been loved as a good omen because they bear many fruits, symbolizing offspring prosperity. The design of Six Gourds is a symbol that wishes health and prosperity, as the Japanese pronunciation of the words "six gourds" is the same as the word “illness-free". The pattern of cherry blossoms (spring) and autumn leaves (fall)  both drawn on each piece expresses the wish for a peaceful life throughout the year.

After molding the pieces by throwing, the pattern is drawn with clay, called "Ichichin-mori" technique. Ichichin-mori is a clay drawing technique created somewhat like piping on cakes. This creates a sense of three-dimensionality and decorativeness.

The colorful gourds make a striking pattern on the yellow surface.
