The pattern with the thin, vertical stripes is called Tokusa, after a plant that grows near Kyomachiya houses. It looks like a small, thin version of bamboo. Like bamboo, it has been regarded as a good omen in design because of the way it stands strongly on its own. It grows fast, so it was often cut off to use in washing and polishing pots and pans, and was also used as a substitute for a tawashi (a scrubbing brush), hence the name "grinding grass”.

The design is common, but the craftsmen of Kyoyaki take great care to carefully embed white pigment in the grooves that are carved out one by one. The white and black pigments are hand painted, carefully so it has no bubbles. The artist is very careful in the way he carves the stand at the bottom. The bottom makes the bowl very comfortable to hold, which seems to improve the position when holding it.
